Help welcome new families this summer

If you would be willing to contact a few new families over the summer and/or attend our new family picnics, your help would certainly be appreciated!

For Prek, LowK & K, we are also looking for families willing to organize gatherings for track/grade that would include new and returning families. Interested?

If you can help with any of these efforts, please let me know. Thank you!!

Annual Giving – THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Thank you so much to the parents of 230 TIS students who donated to the Annual Giving campaign this school year! We have achieved 59% participation and raised$38,000 to support teachers and classroom resources for the school!  This was just a hair under last year’s record numbers!

All donors are recognized by personal thank you letters,  on lists outside of each classroom and in the fundraising report this fall.  If you donated but have not received a thank you letter, there is a chance that your gift did not make it all the way – please contact me.

Parent donations to Annual Giving are really important no matter the amount donated.

  • The Annual Giving participation percentage is the single biggest indicator sought by foundations to determine if we have the support of our community
  • The actual funds donated go directly to support teachers and classroom materials for the children.

Special thanks to Ferran’s and Mieko’s class parents that reached 100% participation! Participation rates by class as of Tuesday morning May 26:

PTO
This is a reminder that three positions still remain vacant on the PTO for next year. The school is looking for strong team players and committed volunteers to move the school forward in these key areas and to join in the mission of the strong executive of the PTO:
New Parent Liaison
Volunteer Coordinator
Pizza Monday Captain

Again, please consider applying for one of these positions. You may contact Paula Prince at paula_prince@comcast.net. The students and staff of TIS need your support.

Volunteer Appreciation, Friday May 29 at 2pm in the gym
Volunteerism forms an integral component of this school community. On Friday, May 29th, the school is hosting a reception in recognition of 2008-09 TIS volunteers. Parents are welcome to stop by the Gym at 2:00 PM for some light refreshment in celebration of TIS volunteerism!

Summer Reading Challenge 2009

Dear Parents,

Most of the students have signed up for the TIS Library Summer Reading Challenge. If the packet did not make it home, you can view the details on the Library Media Center webpage under Parent Resources. You can download a
Summer Reading Tracker form as well. Return the completed form to the librarian in September for awards and treats.

Students are encouraged to sign up for the summer reading program sponsored by your local library. Many students are signed up for Multnomah County’s Summer Reading program already through TIS. Game boards for this program will be going home this week. For more information check out Multnomah County Library’s website www.multocolib.org/summer. All students who sign up will receive a free ticket to a Portland Trailblazer game and a Portland Beavers ticket. This year’s grand prize is a trip for four to Disneyland.

Happy Summer,

Tamara Fornell

School Supply Savings Program

Please watch your mail in late June / early July for a postcard about the School Supply Savings Program for next fall.  The deadline to order supplies will be August 10, and you will be able to order on-line or by check. If you will be out of town, please make sure the school has an up-to-date e-mail address you can access since we will send out 1-2 notices that way as well.

By ordering supplies through the program:

  • You will avoid having to run around to lots of stores, deal with shortages etc.
  • You will save gas / the environment
  • Your child will have exactly the supplies that the teacher wants
  • Your child will have the same supplies as most of his/her classmates
  • Your child’s supplies will be waiting in his/her classroom on the first day of school
  • You will benefit from bulk order discounts

For the ’09-’10 school year we will have an outside vendor managing our School Supply Savings Program. Last year we had 270 students order supplies through the program – that’s terrific and too big for us to manage in-house.

USA School Supplies, a local Portland company, will manage the program for us. From the TIS web site you will be directed to a special place on the USA School Supplies web site with our lists by class and the SSSP packages. You will have the option to buy a package with all the supplies your child needs or to buy a package with only the “consumables” (to use your existing pencil box, ruler, scissors, etc). USA School Supplies will process your payment either on-line or by check and will deliver the supplies to our classrooms before school starts.

Q: Will the supplies be more expensive with an outside vendor managing it?
A: The price will be comparable because even though the vendor needs to make money, they also have access to even deeper bulk discounts than we can get because they buy supplies for multiple schools. They have priced out some of our lists from last year and came in just a little higher than our last year’s prices.

All communication about the program will come from the school office as usual and accessible through the school’s web site. All the lists will be on our web site as well for families that wish to purchase their own supplies.

As always, please let me know if you have questions.

Printing recommendation for Memory Books

This was submitted by a TIS parent

Do you have any upcoming printing needs for flyers and business cards or for a copy service to have your memory book pages copied at a good price during these last weeks of school? We found an awesome copies/printing business with excellent reviews called DocuMart. They will provide you with the best personal customer care, great quality, quick turnaround, and incredible prices !

Give Julie James a call today ! There are two store locations for your convenience and she goes between the two so it is best to call her first:

5121 SW Macadam Ave, Portland OR 97239 or

342 SW Stark St, Portland OR 97204

The next time you or somebody else has printing needs, please think of DocuMart. Julie can be reached at her cell # or email on her business card.

The key dates & events for the ’09-’10 TIS calendar are now on-line! On the school web site (www.intlschool.org), go to Parent Resources, then Calendar.

If you use a Google calendar, you can make the TIS calendar one of yours. At the bottom of your calendar list (generally on the left), click “add”, choose “add a friend’s calendar”, then as the e-mail address, type in: tisadmin@intlschool.org
