Update From Dr. Orsini

Greetings Friends,

Can tomorrow really be the start of September? I guess it must be. The teachers returned today in a flurry of enthusiasm and a few of our board members were on hand to wish us all well as we embark on year 19 in the life of TIS. Tomorrow we will get right down to our work on PYP and inquiry learning and I am committed to making all of our professional development both enjoyable and engaging. As research has confirmed for children, we learn better when we are happy and positive. And we have much to learn.

Cross-track groups for PE, Art & Library (grades 3, 4 & 5)

8We’re excited to have a new system that enables 3rd, 4th & 5th graders from different tracks to have Art, PE & Library classes together. This regular interaction will help friendships develop across tracks and give every student more access to the other cultures in the school.

Each 3rd, 4th & 5th grade teacher will divide her students evenly into “Group A” and “Group B”.

  • Twice per week, all Group A students from all 3rd grade classes will go to art while all Group B 3rd graders go to PE.
  • Two other times per week Group B will go to art while Group A goes to PE.
  • Every other week, one of the Art classes will be replaced by a 30 minute Library class.
  • The same will be true for 4th and 5th graders.

Dr. Orsini's update

Dear Friends,

Hope your week has been a good one. This past weekend I attended another new family picnic at Pendleton Park and then an afternoon event for the LowK Spanish families. Today I began my immersion in work with the talented academic admin team – Maria Abad, Principal, and the track leaders: Maria Lira, Spanish; Ann Zhu, Chinese; Masami Maruki, Japanese; and Teresa Wirsching, English and PYP Coordinator. We are preparing for the Inquiry week with teachers who return next week and doing a thorough review of our policies and practices based on past experience and feedback from staff and parents.

I am pleased to announce that from a field of highly qualified candidates, we have hired Ms. Kelsey Cleveland as our first Development Director. Kelsey comes to us from The Kobe Canadian Academy in Japan, an excellent 90-year old international school, at which she was very successful in creating the development office and leading their massive fund raising effort. Kelsey studied Japanese and Comparative Literature at Smith College and became fluent in Japanese and French. She is an international person, a believer in international education, and a terrific fund raising professional. We are lucky that upon returning to America she landed here in the Portland area and that she was taken by the mission of TIS.

Take good care and more soon,

Alfonso

Want to drive for PK/LK field trips? You'll need First Aid . . .

If you plan to be a chaperone for a class field trip for PreK or LowK classes this year (all class parents are invited to do so), Oregon requires that you have First Aid certification.

To help out, we have scheduled First Aid classes for PreK & LowK parents (do one or the other):

  • Saturday, October 3rd from 8:15 AM – Noon
  • Saturday, October 10th from 8:15 AM to Noon

Classes will be held at TIS and cost is $25 per person. There will be a 10% discount if you pay cash or check the day of class. Classes are open to other TIS parents, but PreK & LK parents will have priority.

To sign up for either class, please contact Kathy Guilfoyle – kathrynguilfoyle@gmail.com or 971-244-3667.

Update from Dr. Orsini

AlfonsoDear Friends,
This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending the Japanese track picnic at school on Saturday, as well as the Spanish and Chinese grade 1 picnics at two lovely parks on Sunday. If you are planning a class get together I would love to attend and meet more people. This past weekend, some parents asked about progress on the study of the Custom House. Board member Scott Kerman is sending out a separate letter on that today.

However, I want to tell you that at last Monday’s meeting I was touched that the board members collectively contributed a substantial sum of money to minimize costs to the school for the detailed Phase 1 study of the Custom House. And thus they voted with their own pocketbooks and their personal commitment to go to the next level in exploration. In the spring survey comments I read one or two rather caustic comments about our board. Our board is not a group of particularly wealthy people. They are, except for one member, current or past parents. We should all understand very clearly that they volunteer many hours of their time to do what is best for this school. They deserve our good faith and our good will.

If all proceeds well with the phase 1 Custom House study, we will also be calling upon community members to help us study such aspects of the site as security and pick-up/ drop off logistics. At the same time that we carefully study the Custom House as a site, we must also be considering other options in case it is not our best choice. I know we are all anxious to know the direction of the school, but we must bear in mind the old Italian saying “ Chi va piano, va sano e va lontano.” Who goes slowly, goes far and safely.”

I have also read in the spring comments many people’s concerns about the rising cost of schooling, and I heard similar comments this weekend. The board and I are very aware of that, and this is a topic at every independent school in America right now. I hope people understand that this non-profit organization is currently funded almost exclusively by tuition and annual fundraisers. All independent schools and colleges in the US rely upon endowment to help supplement tuition income. It is clear that we need to raise money to keep costs down and help sustain the school, and thus we are in the process of hiring a Development Director who can help us in that regard.

At TIS every dollar every year goes to maintaining program and paying bills, and thanks largely to the keen vigilance of Business Manager Rob Timmons, we spend every dollar with great care. Nevertheless we will need to work very hard in the future to raise faculty salaries to an appropriate level and to provide the educational facilities and resources that are required for a strong academic program. While we have some rough edges to work on, the faculty has performed remarkably well at the core business and core vision first set by our generous founders: educating children in another language and culture to become remarkably proficient by fifth grade. We need to remind ourselves more often how amazing that is and how unique in the American landscape. From that basis, and as we build our understanding and enactment of the PYP, and as we build a stronger financial base to provide better facilities, we are going to go from very good to great. We can only do that collaboratively and with good will. And here is what good will means: we must all keep up with communication – parents should read InTheKnow every week and notes from teachers and room parents – and if you have a question or concern, please get in touch. We assume the best of people and we pitch in as so many excellent people in this community do every day!

Until next week, take good care,
Alfonso

Custom House Update from Trustee Scott Kerman

Summer greetings to you from the Custom House Committee. We hope you have been enjoying your summer. We certainly have, but we also have been continuing our work on the Custom House opportunity. I am writing today to update you on the status of the Custom House.

As you may recall, when the school year concluded in June the Board was in the process of receiving proposals from potential developers interested in the Custom House project. This summer, the Board undertook an extensive review and interview process to evaluate these proposals and determine the best course of action for the school. This review involved input from many parent volunteers with expertise in crucial areas, and we thank them for their valuable time. After much consideration, the Board recently selected a developer.

The developer thereafter submitted to the Board a proposal to do a precise Phase 1 feasibility study, one which will involve a number of specialist subcontractors who could later bid on the various parts of the job (however, we will require an open bid process when it comes to future phases). This study is necessary to determine much more exactly the project’s cost and how much money could be raised from tax credits and other sources. This study will also give us a more precise picture of the condition of the building behind the walls and beneath the floorboards. It will also more closely examine alternative and perhaps more intelligent and cost effective ways to do the seismic upgrades and other improvements.

You also may be wondering whether “the clock” has started ticking with regards to our formal acceptance (or not) of GSA’s offer. The short answer to this question is “not yet.” Negotiations among various state and federal agencies are ongoing, and these must be concluded before TIS can begin reviewing and negotiating formal terms of the acquisition contract.

Lastly, the Custom House Committee is ecstatic to have Dr. Orsini on campus and fully engaged in the Custom House project. He is a valuable asset to our consideration of the multiple issues involved, and we thank him in particular for his participation and counsel during the developer selection process.

We hope your final weeks of summer are wonderful and we wish your family a smooth start to what promises to be an extraordinary year at TIS.

Best,

Scott Kerman
Chair, Custom House Communications Subcommittee
