5/21: Music

Well, this is the last update I will be giving you this year. First grade is working on gaining more independence as musicians while understanding that musical stories can be told through song lyrics, movements and instruments. This week we are using the book Over in the Ocean as a song that we can add our own instrumentation and visuals to. Students have been doing a great job showing their own interpretation of music and stories through improvisational dances.

Over the past several weeks we have been playing with aleatoric music. We began by discussing the different families of instruments that I had set out (metals, skins, and woods.) Then students looked at a map on the Smartboard that contained three different shapes. They decide that each shape represented a family and as we traveled across the map , students played when they saw their instruments picture. We eventually made it more complex as we decided to have multiple families play at the same time.

Our instrument practice has also incorporated more work with dynamics, rhythmic patterns and playing in unity. Students have been singing and playing instruments to some fun pieces like Hotaru Koi and We are Dancing in the Forest. It has been such an amazing experience to work with your children this year. I am going to miss them next year. Thank you so much for this opportunity and I hope you have a wonderful summer!
