Dec 5,2014: Music

Happy December! Kindergarten is working very hard and I am proud of them. This week’s opening activity is a dance called, “Oats and Beans and Barley Grow.” I love doing this song! It requires the use of singing, steady beat, social skills and, of course, my favorite part is that the kids seem to really enjoy it.

A recent highlight is that the children are doing a wonderful job transitioning from one instrument to the next. We have been using “Baa Baa Black Sheep” as our instrumental piece this week. Students sing one musical phrase and then speak the next phrase while improvising their own rhythmic or melodic accompaniment.

We are also working on a game called “Hotspot.” In this game, we do a pat, clap, snap, snap pattern. On the first snap the students have to say their own name and on the second snap they say another person’s name.  This is very challenging for Kinders and yet, they feel so successful when they master it. It would be a great help if you would like to ask your child about this activity and work on it together at home.  I hope you enjoy the holidays!
