October 17, 2014: Music

Hello and Happy October!

We have been very busy in our LowK music class. It is only the beginning of the year and yet, there is so much to do. We start off each lesson by singing hello to each other in a descending minor third pattern. After our daily greetings, I always sing through a book. We have done some fun ones like Pete the Cat: Four Groovy Buttons and There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves. A favorite activity is when we play with scarves while singing songs such as “All the Leaves are Falling Down,” and “Saw a Leaf.” We also have enjoyed moving to the song “Jelly on a Plate,” “Shake My Sillies Out,” “The More We Get Together,” and “Monster Man” which is where we walk around the room making silly faces.

I design my classes to be a combination of movement and sitting so that activities feel new and help keep students engaged. During our sitting time, we have done a few rhythmic poems, “5 Little Pumpkins,” “Big Pig, Big Pig,” and of course, instruments! Students are getting a chance to explore with triangles, slit drums, guiro, cabasas, and many more. These children are incredible and I am so excited that I get to teach them. It is going to be a wonderful year!
