Buildings & Grounds subcommittee update

Recently, the Buildings and Grounds Subcommittee met to discuss current and future projects concerning our facilities. This subcommittee is comprised of the Board's Buildings and Grounds Committee members and ten parent volunteers who have experience and expertise in many significant areas. Dr. Orsini and Frank Bojanowski also were present at this meeting.

Many items were on the agenda for this initial meeting of the year. Lynda Wannamaker and Kim Marcus updated the subcommittee on recent developments regarding the light rail project. The subcommittee learned that construction on the light rail currently is slated to begin in 2011, with potential set-up in lay down areas occurring in 2010. The subcommittee remains involved in the light rail process and will continue to work with project planners. The subcommittee's Parking and Planning Task Force also discussed conducting an updated parking and traffic survey of parents, focusing particularly on ways to facilitate car pooling and alternative transportation to and from campus.

The Grounds Task Force discussed improvements to the play field, particularly a fence around portions of the field where Coach Rob says soccer balls take off. Frank Bojanowski and Dr. Orsini discussed external security matters, including efforts to reduce and eliminate the transient and homeless presence around campus. To this end, TIS has been granted exclusive use of the greenspace area abutting the Main Building at the top of the hill. You may have noticed new No Trespassing signs posted in these areas. Another project on the agenda involved aesthetic landscaping improvements in the areas around Modular 3 and on the Naito Parkway side of the Main Building. Subcommittee members and landcape specialists Mike Andrews and Martha Koerner volunteered to draw up plans for Dr. Orsini's consideration.

The Facilities Task Force discussed potential green measures that could improve the efficiency and sustainability of our facilities. Subcommittee member Andrea Paluso, who also is the Chair of the TIS Green Committee, will help ensure greater coordination of efforts between the Board and the Green Committee.

The Subcommittee also discussed three future projects to upgrade and improve facilities at TIS: drainage behind Stearns Hall (the area currently covered by tarps between Stearns Hall and Modular 3), the slope behind Modular 2, and the HVAC system in Stearns Hall. Frank Bojanowski and Kim Marcus have been working on these projects since last school year, and they are working on plans to be implemented during or immediately after this school year. These projects also were discussed by the full Board during its meeting last week.

Thank you to all of the parents who have committed time and expertise to this committee. These parents have performed valuable services for our campus in previous years, and we look forward to their continued contributions this year.
