Update From Dr. Orsini

Greetings Friends,

Can tomorrow really be the start of September? I guess it must be. The teachers returned today in a flurry of enthusiasm and a few of our board members were on hand to wish us all well as we embark on year 19 in the life of TIS. Tomorrow we will get right down to our work on PYP and inquiry learning and I am committed to making all of our professional development both enjoyable and engaging. As research has confirmed for children, we learn better when we are happy and positive. And we have much to learn.

I know some of you are struggling to complete summer homework. This year we, as a staff will be looking carefully at homework- nightly, holiday and summer homework to determine what is most sensible and most effective. Have a look at this link
http://roomfordebate.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/30/the-crush-of-summer-homework/?hp to a New York Times discussion on summer homework sent to me by a TIS parent. And here is a late summer tip. If your child doesn’t know how to do it and you don’t know how to do it and the instructions and purpose are not clear, then spend your time doing something else more productive. And may this be the last time you ever deal with summer homework that is not clear or effective.

As I told you earlier in the summer, in line with the strategic plan, we will be designing an evaluation system this autumn and enacting it this year. If you have time on your hands and are interested, have a look at this document I sent out to teachers as a prompt to discussion: Click Here to View

The draft strategic plan was approved by the board last spring and I recently resubmitted it to the board with the dates of implementation I felt comfortable with. I felt compelled to move the dates for almost everything earlier. This school is so fantastic that I don’t want to see it marred by imperfections for even one minute longer than is necessary. After our welcome this morning, I felt really grateful to have such a talented and committed staff alongside me. And I am glad you are with us, too.

Take care and see you soon,
Alfonso
