When I Am In Charge (class description from the Oregon Red Cross website)
Cost: $18.00 | Length: 2 hours 30 minutes |
Trusting your child to be home alone can be hard; prepare them for this responsibility with the help of the American Red Cross. If your child is 8 to 11 years old, this course will prepare them to respond safely to a variety of “home alone” situations. Participants will:

  • Role play answering the phone and door

  • Discuss gun and internet safety

  • Discuss personal safety and first aid situations

  • Receive a participation guide, notepads and blank emergency phone lists.

Parents are encouraged to attend the final half-hour of the class to watch the safety video and participate in a role playing activity.

To register your 8 - 11 year old, contact TIS parent Cheryl Meloy at clmeloy@comcast.net.  Please indicate date and number of children attending. Each class needs at least 10 – 20 maximum participants. Friends of TIS students may attend – no children under age 8 years old. Payment can be made to Cheryl Meloy at the class.

Frequently asked question: If it is unlawful in Oregon to leave a child under age 10 unattended in or at any place for such period of time as may be likely to endanger health or welfare, why should 8-year-olds attend this class?

Answer: To teach youth potentially life saving skills and strategies on preventing, preparing for, and responding to emergencies if a parent or guardian is not immediately available.
