4/19: News from Alfonso

Greetings friends,

T.S. Eliot, who wrote in The Wasteland that “April is the cruelest month” obviously never lived in Portland, Oregon. I was heartened to see this past Saturday morning that over 40 parents along with their children and a host of other SOLV volunteers showed up to clean up the TIS environs, to extirpate invasive plants, and even to dig trenches for a new irrigation system to the garden. We are all grateful to these volunteers for giving of their time and having such fun in the process. Special thanks to Jackie Calder and the Green Committee for organizing.

Last week saw once again a number of exciting TIS activities.

  • On Tuesday, grade 5 students had the first of three 90 minute sessions with scientist, inventor and TIS parent, Dr. Craig Miller at his office, right across the street from our Arthur Street campus. Dr. Miller’s demonstrations and probing questions really bring science to life.

  • Last Thursday grade 3-5 students enjoyed an assembly presentation, complete with video footage, on the Spanish Capstone trip to Merida, Mexico.

  • On Thursday afternoon we also had the highly enjoyable Beverly Cleary party for all those students who met the reading challenge. Thanks to Librarian Tamara Fornell and to the host of parents who volunteered.

Do mark on your calendars that we have coming up on April 30th the Latino Festival and on May 1st the Wine Tasting.

Have a good week, and I’ll see you at the corner.
