Safety of new playground wood chips

We recently added new bark chips to the playground. Some parents voiced concern about preservative or chemicals being added to the bark chips. This is a valid question as many of your garden store varieties do contain chemicals to retard the breakdown of the wood.

The wood chips we use on the playground are FIBAR wood chips - see www.fibar.com/playgrounds/systems_faq.htm for answers to many questions.  These Engineered Wood Chips meet ASTM standards F1292 (Impact absorption), F2075 (Material purity) and F1951 (Wheel chair friendly). They cost more than the generic playground chip but we are assured of the purity of the chip, the size and cut of the chip (cut in a fashion so kids won't get poked in fall or get slivers). In short, every item brought on campus is assessed for its purity and safety before we use it.

If you have any concerns regarding products or items we use on campus feel free to ask. I will be happy to answer your questions. We take the health and well being of our children very seriously as we strive to create the safest, most non toxic environment possible. This summer we will continue on our progress with the campus improvements. Have a great summer and we'll see you in September.
