"In the Know" Weekly Newsletter - The International School

Notes from Alfonso and classroom locations - 8/29

Dear Friends,
Here we are on the brink of another school year and the teachers have returned for an action packed week. To fifth grade Chinese we welcome new teacher Wen Chyou Kuo. We also welcome returning English teacher Lara Fowdy Drouhard who will be teaching two English classes. A kind of welcome back also to Jing Jing Song, whom we all know as a student monitor, who will now be an aide to Yu Yen in Low K Chinese. Later in September we will also be welcoming an intern teacher from Spain and two visiting teachers from China who will work in various classes.

Besides setting up their rooms this week (itself a monumental task), teachers will be planning in grade level teams and attending workshops on math teaching, portfolio building and how to use Atlas curriculum software to track the work they do in math, science, social studies and language. As a whole, faculty we will be reviewing our school wide IB Program of Inquiry.

Repeated thanks are due to Frank and Eros and the entire crew who have worked extremely hard to get the buildings in shape; to Jhoanna, who has been getting all the computers ready with help from parent volunteers; and to Maria Xiong, Lauren and Shelley who are preparing to welcome everyone smoothly as they always do. A very special thanks to Linda Bonder, who in the midst of organizing an incredible number of things found time to run a lot of miles last weekend in the Hood to Coast race. Congratulations to all the TIS parents who ran, walked or volunteered - it sounds like a classic Oregon phenomenon and certainly a big accomplishment.

Class locations are final - click here to see the maps. All parents will receive an e-mail from their child's teacher this week.

See you all soon, and enjoy this last week with your kids.
