Ready, Set, Read!

The International School Library Media Center is sponsoring its fourth annual Beverly Cleary Children’s Choice Award Challenge for students in all grades. This year fourth and fifth graders may choose to participate instead (or in addition to!) in the Oregon Readers Choice Award Challenge.

The Beverly Cleary Children’s Choice Award is an annual book award sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries in honor of Oregon’s own children’s book author, Beverly Cleary. The purpose of this award is to highlight quality literature students may not find on their own and are not necessarily the popular best sellers. These books are appropriate for young readers with reading levels ranging from second through fifth grade. Readers may participate in voting for the 2012 winner by reading at least two of the six books nominated. Students will vote for their favorite book during library class in April.

TIS students who read, or are read to, all six (6) books nominated for the award will meet the challenge! (Audiobooks are fine, too.) These students will be recognized for their achievement at a celebration on April 18, 2012 in the TIS gymnasium.

The Oregon Reader’s Choice Award (ORCA) was started in 2010 as a way for Oregon children and young adults to read high quality, popular books and select the best of the best.  Eight books are nominated and participating TIS fourth and fifth graders must read at least two titles to vote and six to participate in the celebration.  Voting will take place during the last week of March.

Multiple copies of the books for both challenges will be available in the school library for checkout.  These books are also available at your local public library or book store.  As the books are always in high demand, please plan ahead.

The challenge runs from January 3 through April 12, 2012.  Students who wish to participate must turn in completed Progress Tracker forms by April 12, 2012.

More information is available about Beverly Cleary, BCCCA and ORCA on the Library Media Center webpage.  Please contact me if you have any questions.

Happy Reading!
