"In the Know" Weekly Newsletter - The International School

Update from Board President, Scott Kerman

With the start of March, it is time for the Board to begin looking ahead to the end of the year and the transition into 2012-13. This includes a review of the Strategic Plan so we can measure our progress to date and make plans for continued progress in the future. The Strategic Plan is a living document, so it is critical that the Board continually revisits its tenants and objectives. Each of our committees--Governance, Buildings and Grounds, Development, and Finance--are working to complete their respective projects and meet goals set forth for this year. For Trustees, it's an exciting time because we can both look back with pride on our accomplishments and look forward with optimism for what we will accomplish. Current parents may read the Strategic Plan with the All-Parent Password at intlschool.org/parents/news/docs/.

The Campus Master Plan project has been completed, and the Board has launched the first phase of its work in response to this plan. Much of this work for the moment is "behind the scenes," but you can trust that we are working professionally and diligently to prepare the school to meet its future facility needs. I want to thank the Trustees, teachers, staff, and parents who worked so tirelessly on the Campus Master Plan project. And the Board certainly thanks Dr. Orsini for his leadership and guidance. The result is something of which we can be very proud and which speaks so well for the uniqueness of TIS's program and community. Current parents may read about the Campus Master Plan at intlschool.org/parents under the Current Events menu. Use the All-Parent Password.

The Board also is working with teachers and staff in preparation for Robert Woods coming to TIS. Robert and his wife Amelia will be on site during the first week of April. It will be

a great opportunity for Robert to meet with Trustees, teachers, and staff, as well as an opportunity for Robert and Amelia to get to know our TIS community and Portland better. There will be events for parents to meet with Robert--dates and times will be announced in future issues of In the Know.

Of course, we are ever so mindful that welcoming Robert and Amelia means saying farewell to Alfonso and Ven Ven. Despite Alfonso's humility, we will definitely celebrate his time with us in style. If you would like to help with these preparations, please watch for information from your child's teacher.

And speaking of farewells, as Alfonso informed us last week, Jhoanna Co is leaving TIS this Friday to begin the next chapter of her life. I have known Jhoanna from when she first started at TIS, and I have had the pleasure of working with her as a Trustee and Board Chair for three years. Jhoanna does many things at TIS; she has touched many, many students and families. This also includes the Board. Jhoanna has cheerfully and professionally assisted the Board in the performance of its responsibilities, from helping us organize our meetings to taking minutes to being our liaison with PNAIS and other partners. The Board owes Jhoanna a great deal of gratitude. She will be missed both personally and professionally.
