Before Thanksgiving we had a visit from several groups involved in our China Capstone trip! We were happy to have representatives of NISE (Northwest International Student Exchange) and C-time, both host student agencies we are working with, and also a few teachers from Chaoyang Foreign Language School.
Chaoyang Foreign Language School is the host school our Chinese track 5th graders will be visiting on the upcoming Capstone trip. It is a K-12th grade school located in the Chaoyang (administrative) district of Beijing. As 5th grade teacher Xiao Fu explained, "Foreign Language School" does not mean it specializes in foreign languages (in fact, Chinese is the instructional language), it is simply a way to name the school, just as schools in the US are often named for famous historical figures. The school seems like a great fit for us because the building is new and modern, the curriculum is rigorous, and the school community is very warm and welcoming. Our visitors enjoyed hearing about how our students from our Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese tracks interact during specialist classes.
Our 5th grade Chinese track students will be going to China from March 6 to 21. They will spend 5 days attending the Chaoyang Foreign Language School school while living with host families from the school. While in China, our students will be working on their IB Exhibition project comparing cultures, a unique experience for 10- and 11-year olds! Many thanks to TIS parent Alix Nathan, executive director of NISE, for making the host school match!
