Thank you so much to those who participated in the school bus survey. Unfortunately, the results show that we do not have nearly enough interest in any one area of town to make the service affordable.
- 140 families took the survey. Only 48 of those were interested in pursuing the options to the next step, and those 48 were scattered around Portland.
- Of the 140, 20 parents were "somewhat likely" or "very likely" to sign on for bus service in both directions at $175 per month or more. The bus company estimate for 20 students (all getting on at the same stop) was about $220 per month.
- There was somewhat more interest in the "unlimited mornings" service, but still, not anywhere close to the number we would need to make the service affordable.
If the results showed that we were close to the needed interest, we would refine the plan and go back to parents again. But we are very far off - it just doesn't look feasible for our community at this point.
Instead of pursuing buses, we are going to focus on ways to make carpooling easier. This summer we will be asking people to "opt in" for us to put their home addresses into http://batchgeo.com/ (confidential to our community). That will produce a map showing where our families live, making it super easy to find TIS families in your neighborhood.
As always, please let me know if you have any comments or questions.
