A Teacher's Perspective on the New Building

“You know this really isn’t about a beautiful new building,” says Mercy Martinez, 5th Grade Spanish Track Teacher. “It’s about what it will do for our students. We’re good at adapting our classrooms to make them work but they’re not ideal. When you’re building and creating, you need SPACE. This is really what excites me about the new building. We will have room to create."
A key component of the new building is enhancing the hands-on style of learning central to the IB Primary Years Programme taught at The International School. Every classroom has space for the full class to meet, as well as small break out areas for individuals or small group work. A large common area provides new opportunities for the whole grade to collaborate, discuss, or listen to a guest speaker.

Please make a contribution today to help fund sinks, cubbies and cupboards for the new building. Pledge forms were sent via mail and are available at all front offices or by emailing Development Director LaurenR@intlschool.org, 503.226.2496 ext 117.

“A sink is not a luxury, it’s a necessity in a project-based class. We’re hands on! We’re constantly working with art materials, clay and dirt. We use water in our projects – to build damns, to talk about renewable resources.  We need a sink.” – Mercy Martinez, 5th grade teacher
