THE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL CUTS RIBBON ON NEW CLASSROOM BUILDING

$6 Million “Learners’ Hall” Supports School’s Unique Multicultural, International Baccalaureate Learning Environment

The International School, a language immersion and International Baccaulareate elementary school, opened the 2016-17 year by welcoming its 4th and 5th grade students into a brand-new classroom building. Resting on a hilltop that overlooks downtown Portland and the revitalized SW Waterfront area, ‘Learners’ Hall” is considered to be a major step for The International School towards providing its students with an optimal learning environment, as well as fulfilling the school’s vision of becoming a center of excellence in multicultural education.

Learners’ Hall was designed in accordance with the TIS mission of fostering global citizenship. Its ten large classrooms and roomy, open workspaces will encourage collaboration and mingling between the school’s Chinese, Spanish, and Japanese immersion tracks. The multicultural environment helps to enable the development of the traits embodied in the school’s International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, such as “knowledgeable,” “open-minded,” and “reflective.”

“Over the course of 26 years, we have developed an exceptional academic program,” says Robert Woods, Executive Director of TIS. “Now, we are building facilities that match the quality of education at TIS and help to establish us as the preeminent school for language immersion on the West Coast. This will have profound benefits for our entire community, but most notably for our students and faculty.”

The School financed half of the $6 million cost and raised the remaining funds through philanthropic support. Mahlum Architects is the architect, and Triplett Wellman is the primary contractor. Learners’ Hall has a number of sustainable design features, including being partially solar-powered.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for Learners’ Hall was held on Monday, August 29, at 8:30am. Consul General Uchiyama of the Consular Office of Japan in Portland perfomed the ribbon-cutting.
