Before & After School Programs

Many International School students participate in activities on the school campus outside of school hours. Whether to accommodate family schedules or just for fun and enrichment, there are many great extracurricular programs available for our students.
Before school
Morning childcare is offered beginning at 7:30 a.m. at no additional cost. The childcare is supervised by International School Staff. Students do not have to be signed up in advance.
SquareGator is also offering morning childcare on-site starting at 6:30am for those who need earlier coverage. Details at www.SquareGator.com.
After school
Daily after school fun, as well as childcare on teacher in-service days & certain holidays is provided on-site at The International School by Squaregator. See www.SquareGator.com for information, calendar, schedules and enrollment forms.

TAIKO, Japanese drum: The essence of taiko is not only skillful playing of drum instruments, but also discipline of mind and body in the spirit of complete respect and unity among others. Taiko goes beyond all cultures - it is universal and anyone can learn to do. Kinder-1st: Tues 3:30-4:15pm, 1/8-2/26 (8weeks) $105. 2-5th grades: Wed 3:30-4:30pm, 1/9-2/27 (8weeks) $145. After School Band: Mondays 3:30 - 4:15, grades 3-5. Students must bring their own instrument (flute, clarinet, alto sax, trombone, trumpet, horn or percussion-drum pad and sticks)and book (Essential Elements 2000, Book 1) to every class. Taught by TIS music teacher Carol Olson in the TIS music room. See Carol to sign up.
Scuola Italiana di Portland: language enrichment classes, weekdays after school, weekend mornings. Taught by a native Italian elementary school teacher right here at TIS. See www.scuola.us for details.
Chinese dance and choir: Little Dove of Peace Art Troupe Troupe. Taught by Yafei Liu and Tina Tian. Open to all students interested in traditional Chinese dance or song. More information, schedule & enrollment form here.
Origami: Thursdays/3:40-4:30. $4/mo (for supplies). Open for all students LK and up and adults. Learn the ancient Japanese art of origami. A good practice in accuracy and patience that can build confidence. Taught by Chisa Terano. To sign up, contact Chisa at ChisaTIS@yahoo.com.

Shudokan School of Karate: Ages 4 and up. Taught by Sensei Reed Secunda. Karate helps students get more focused at school and at home. They gain confidence, which helps them make good decisions in life. Parents and potential students are welcome to sit in on the class. Newcomers can try it out in 2 free classes. Third Languages:

My Smilin’ Violin: Beginning-intermediate violin programming and instrument rentals. Group or individual violin lessons, young musicians gain self-confidence & develop creative expression while building the skills & abilities needed to enjoy music. Shaolin Martial Arts: For students - Age 7+: Monday - Friday/7:30am - 8:15am. Ages 5-7: Tuesdays 3:30-4:30. Ages 8+: Fridays 3:30-4:30. For Parents (participation can be once a week or more): Monday - Friday/8:30am - 9:30am. Monday - Friday/2:00 - 3:00pm Taught by Shaolin Monk, Chen Shou Shuang. Chinese Homework Club: Daily from 3:30-4:30 (minimum 5 students per class needed). (Separate times for Art Troupe members, see Art Troupe information page). Group homework help for current Chinese track students 1st-5th grade.
